Raducanu is no stranger to managing outside pressure – expectations around the Briton increased following her US Open title in 2021 – and she can keep a cool head in her third-round duel with Sakkari.
Raducanu looks like she will savor this chance; she went the whole at Flushing Meadows as a youngster and this is the first time she has advanced to the third round of a Grand Slam.
Focusing on her grass-court preparations, the 21-year-old chose to forgo the French Open this year, running to the Nottingham Open’s semi-finals and the Eastbourne International’s quarter-finals instead.
After her 6-1, 6-2 second-round destruction of Elise Mertens, Raducanu is looking sharp once more and can defend favoritism against Sakkari, who lost their only prior match at the US Open three years ago.
Carlos Alcaraz v. Frances Tiafoe forecasts
Carlos Alcaraz, the defending champion from All England Club, has ripped off consecutive straight-set victories to qualify for Wimbledon, but he might run against tougher challenge from 29th seed Frances Tiafoe.
Going into the third Slam, excitement about Tiafoe was dampened; he lost his sole match at the Queen’s Club against Renty Hijikata but was outstanding against last-64 opponent Borna Coric previous time out.
Back the strong 29th seed to win a set in defeat to the French Open winner; Tiafoe won 87 percent of his games on his first serve in that outing and had hints of the kind of form which has made the Maryland native a threat in Grand Slams before.
Diana Shnaider v. Emma Navarro forecasts
Emma Navarro made light play of Naomi Osaka last time out, defeating the four-time Grand Slam singles star 6-4 6-1, but the Spaniard should be cautious about a meeting with Diana Shnaider in the third round.
Navarro could go deep in the women’s singles at Wimbledon this year and cut a calm figure against Osaka, but her next opponent Shnaider crushed her in three sets in the semi-finals on the Bad Homburg grass-court prep event last week.
Shnaider went on to triumph in that competition and has since scorched second-round Wimbledon visitor Sloane Stephens 6-1 6-1.
Given the possible gap between these players, supporting the match to go the distance could be wise.
